Horses

I was asked by my aunt to make a cake for my uncle's birthday. They are major horse people so there of course had to be a horse on his birthday cake. Duh!

When I was searching Pinterest for some horse cake ideas I was having the hardest time trying to find something to give me some inspiration. The only thing that I could really find was a tutorial to make a horse out of fondant. I didn't want to use fondant so instead I used candy clay.

The tutorial I found was made by the Artisan Cake Company. It's a really great tutorial because she explains it very well and there are so many details to the horse (or in the tutorials instance, a unicorn) that makes it look a little more realistic. Since I didn't make the unicorn from the tutorial and wanted it to look more horse-like, I made it with brown candy clay and then added in some white candy clay spots to give the horse a little character.

I also used the candy clay to cover the cake and add the decoration details of the fence and flowers.

Candy Clay
1 bag candy melts
1/3 cup light corn syrup

Melt the candy melts via the instructions on the bag. Once completely melted mix in the corn syrup. Don't mix it too much, just until the corn syrup is incorporated and a sugar paste forms. Mix it with only 20 strokes. If you over mix the chocolate will separate. Wrap in plastic wrap and let sit for an hour. Knead the candy clay to get rid of the wax pockets/balls that were formed. When it's all smooth wrap it back up in the plastic wrap and let it sit overnight.

When ready to use knead with your hands. You may need a little bit of powdered sugar to prevent sticking. You can roll it out and cut out shapes or mold shapes. If molding it's best to let it sit out over night to let it dry out a bit.
